Analyze keywords and competitors with SEMrush

Learn how to do SEMrush keyword research to find the best keywords to optimize your website for in this tutorial for beginners.

SEMrush is one of the most used premium marketing tools. It provides useful insights into SEO, backlinks and information about competitors that advertise in Google Ads.

You can view a lot of information about keywords and you can analyze other websites to see which pages generate the most traffic.

Create SEMrush account

To do SEMrush keyword research you first have to create an account.

Use the link and click on the button to Get a free 7-day trial

Enter your email address and a password and after that you need to click on Create your account to proceed. This will take less than a minute to finish.

After the account has been successfully created, you will have access to the SEMrush dashboard.

The dashboard is well-arranged and has many different options on the left in the menu that you can choose from.

In another tutorial I will go deeper into all the possibilities because you can do a lot of nice things with SEMrush.

How to do SEMrush keyword research

Now I will show you how to quickly analyze keywords and competitors.

In the tutorial How to create a keywords list I showed how you can quickly and easily create a complete list of keywords to analyze.

I am now going to enter this list in SEMrush and for this I go to the Keyword Overview option in the dashboard. 

Here you can enter a maximum of 100 keywords, and if you have more than 100 keywords, you have to analyze them in different stages.

Now I paste a number of keywords from my keyword list in the field.

You can also export all the data later and then merge it if you want a single file with much more than 100 keywords. But with 100 keywords you can ome a long way.

After the keywords have been added, you can optionally add a location and you can also adjust this later, then click on Analyze to continue.

Now we see an overview with the results of all keywords.

The overview is a bit like that of the Google Keyword Planner.  As you can see SEMrush gives a much clearer indication of the search volume and has more useful insights to offer.

The KD% column shows a score that indicates how difficult it is to rank organically in the search engines. The higher the score, the more difficult it is to achieve organic high positions.

In the next columns you can see what the average CPC amount is for advertising on Google Ads. The Competition column shows how high the competition is on the Google Ads network.

The Results column tells you how many pages are showing in Google search results for the given keyword. 

It’s logically easier to rank higher if the results are on the lower side.

With this information you can very well determine which keywords are interesting and have the most potential to generate traffic.

If you wish, you can also export the overview by clicking Export.

As mentioned before, SEMrush has many more useful options and I will briefly show a few of them.

Click on any keyword to view more information. On the page that is now displayed, you will find useful information about the keyword.

With SEMrush you can also easily find new keywords in the columns below.

This way you can view Keyword Variations and Questions and you also have an overview with Related Keywords.

In all overviews you can immediately see what the average monthly search volume is. You can also see the score to rank organically in the search engines.

To view even more keyword suggestions, you can click on one of the buttons and you will see a complete overview again.

As you can see, it is super easy to find many more interesting keywords this way.


Analyze competitors with SEMrush

I want to show you one other useful feature in this tutorial and that’s the information you’ll find at the bottom of the page at SERP Analysis.

Here you can see which pages are currently ranking in Google.

If you want to get inspiration for your own website or just want to see which pages and content the competition scores high with, you can use these options.

By clicking on the icon behind the link you can open the page in a new tab.

When I view pages of competitors I always pay attention to the headers and what kind of information is displayed on the page.

This way you can collect the topics from different websites and make your own page that is even more extensive and specific.

It is important to make unique texts yourself, so don’t copy and paste texts from other websites because this can give your website a penalty and it will no longer be shown in the search results.

By clicking on a competitor’s link, you can view the Organic Research report of the specific page associated with the link.

Here you will find more information about the number of keywords with which this page generates traffic and how much traffic.
You can also see from when the page started ranking in Google.

Below you will find an overview of the Top Organic Keywords. These are the keywords that generates the most traffic. You can also click on the blue button to view a total overview of all keywords.

It actually all works very naturally as you can see.

In the column Top Position Changes you can see which keywords are rising or falling for this page. At the bottom of the page you can also find an overview with information from competitors.

Again you can click on the icon behind a link in the overview Main Organic Competitors to view the page of competitors. If you click on the link you can view the overview with information.
