How to get started with Midjourney AI?

To get started go to Midjourney’s website.

Midjourney is an artificial intelligence program created by an independent research lab in San Francisco.

Midjourney generates images based on natural language descriptions called “prompts” and it really easy to do this. In a moment I will give some examples of this.

You can use Midjourney for free and there is also a paid version available with a number of interesting benefits.

To use the free version of Midjourney AI you can click on the option Join the Beta.

All you need to use Midjourney is a Discord account.

Discord is an instant messaging and digital distribution platform designed for creating online communities.

You can use Discord for free so no costs are involved.

If you already have a Discord account, you can use it or you can create a new account in a few clicks.

sign in with Discord account

After you have signed in with your Discord account you will see a couple of General Image Gen options:

Go to General Image Gen in Discord

Here you can see the AI art that other users make and here you can also make AI yourself.
Above the image you can also see what text was used in the prompt to create the images.

Prompt midjourney to generate images example

You may also notice that in some cases 4 different images are shown below the prompt and in other cases it is 1 image.

That’s because Midjourney gives 4 suggestions for an image at the first prompt. And if you want to use 1 of them, you can make an individual image of it.

How to create images with Midjourney AI

Now I’ll show you how to create an image from text you enter in the prompt.
To create a prompt, click on the bar at the bottom of your screen.

Creating a prompt in Midjourney is very easy, just enter: /imagine

Just to make sure: Don’t enter ”image” but ”imagine”. Now you will see that ‘prompt’ is mentioned in bar.
If you only enter the / sign, you will see that there are already several options displayed by Midjourney that you can select.

But to create an image based on a text description you can use the /imagine prompt option.

select image prompt to create images with

Now the fun part begins, here you can enter any text and Midjourney will start making AI art based on that.

For this example, I enter the following text: Dog and cat playing on the moon with stars and planets in the background, realistic, detailed, oil paint style art.

Now hit enter to enter the prompt and then you need to wait a while for the image to finish.

My advice is to just start it yourself and try different things.
If you need inspiration, you can also look at prompts from other users’ images that you like.

The disadvantage of the free version is that when it is very busy it sometimes becomes a bit cluttered, and you need to search for your image.

If you have the paid version, you will get a private channel and you will only see your own images. In addition, you can also use the channels for free Midjourney AI users.

You will be notified when your image is ready. Now you will see that there are 4 different suggestions based on your search.

Midjourney AI helpful features

Now I’m going back to Midjourney and I want to show you some more useful options.

Below the image you will see the following options: U1, U2, U3, U4 and V1, V2, V3, V4.

With the U options you can generate 1 of 4 images individually by clicking on them.
If you have an image that you want to use, you can create it as a separate image this way.

With the V options you can make 4 new variants of 1 of the images.

This option is useful if you like 1 of the 4 suggestions and want to make several variants based on that. If the options turn blue, it indicates that Midjourney is processing the image.

For this example, I have selected the U4 and the V3 options.

This means that for the fourth image and single version will be generated and for the third image it will create 4 new variants.

If you pay attention, you can see there’s still a small detail that’s incorrect which is one paw of the dog it not displays correctly.

That can happen sometimes because and is no big deal because you can fix this very easily.

Therefore, you can also make several variations of this image by clicking on ‘Make variations’ for this image and then you can select an image where the paw is displayed correctly.

Over at the V option you will see that there are 4 different suggestions based on your search.

You could again make single images from 1 of these options or go even further with making different variants.

To summarize it one more time, I will show you one more example of a prompt. It’s quite addictive to give new assignments over and over and see what Midjourney makes of it.

Go to the bar and type in: /imagine

Now you will see prompt appears in the bar and now you can enter the descriptive text.

select imagine prompt

For the next example, I will use: Fantasy world with waterfalls and beautiful nature, sunset and animals, landscape view, realistic detailed art
